1. La casa Smitty

Well, folks, we did it!  We finally tweaked, organized, straightened, and swept our place good enough to snap a few pics that we can be proud of.  I’d like to do a more detailed series of each room and some step-by-step DIY tutorials later on, but today I’ll giving you the whole shabang in a nutshell.

Let me back up. When we moved back to western Oklahoma about five years ago, we were on the hunt for a house that suited our family of two.  We knew we’d be here a while because of Jbird’s job, and we wanted to settle down close to family.  After not having much luck in the house hunting department, we realized that the seemingly unattainable big city loft-style living could actual become reality in this small town.

Shortly after, we found an amazing place to transform into the home of our dreams.  Built in the 1920’s for doctor and dentist offices, the downtown building happened to be just right for our budget.

You really must see the beginnings of this crazy undertaking.  I encourage you to take a look at these before reading on.

As you can see, my sweet, skinny, wonderful Jbird had quite a vision.  One that gave me heart palpitations just thinking about its enormity.  One that, at times, made me want to kick him in his precious nutsies.  But, I can honestly say, I am glad he/we pressed on and made it happen.  I am so blessed to get to live in a lovely home that we can share and enjoy with family, friends, and the occasional innocent pedestrian that lets themselves in only to find my husband and son eating Marshmallow Mateys in their underwear.  I love it.

I also love that during the process, in the midst of the craziness of tearing down lath and plaster in the wee hours of the morning, I wiped the sweat from my dusty brow and saw this.  It was the only thing taped to a lonely board waiting for the ol’ chopperoo.

Doesn’t get much cooler than that.

The almost two years of sleep-deprived Jbird looking like a human-sized dust bunny was totally worth it.  Take a look.

    Come see us sometime!

I can’t believe the transformation. Dorm life would have been better if you could have done that for Roger’s Hall.

WOW! I love this so much! I’ll trade you houses.. smile The doors off your master (I think) remind me of the doors we had in elementary school 20-some-odd-years ago. Also, the doors where you see the detective’s name written on the frosted glass in black.. cue in some super attractive woman dressed in black…

P.S. The Hammond family is still enjoying our Smitty Baby book!

Ahhh, the loft.
How I love Thee.

I still can’t get over how beautiful everything is.
If you four happen to move out anytime soon, I wouldn’t mind taking it off your hands.
Just throwin’ that out there. smile

Oh goodness, I couldn’t love it any more and I don’t even know you guys!

W’s room is my favorite.  Love the hidey-hole!

Now, in the green room: looks like those are 4x6 photos above the sofa?  Can we get some details on how those are mounted?

Wyldie, you better save a spot for Grammy in your hidey hole!

I just finished looking at all the pics.  Very impressive!!  I like the comparison where you let us see the first stages of tearing out the old wall studs.  Very well done; the construction, and this picture series.

This is beyond impressive…Saw it on Apartment Therapy and was completely blown away (cue Wayne and Garth…We’re not worthy).  Very cool…Congrats!

Saw your post on Apartment Therapy. As an (former) Oklahoman, it was great to see those former downtown buildings brought back to life. This is the reason why I became an architect and urban designer. Great job.

Just saw this on Apartment Therapy and all I can say is AMAZING!  Can you please share the name of the blue on the stairway? It’s just color I’m looking for.

You buddy Dave shot me an email this morning with a link to your AT post and you guys… your place brought tears to my eyes. Not only because I’m insanely jealous (in a good way) but because I’m so proud that this space is in Oklahoma. And then after visiting your blog I’m not only convinced that I need a super kid-unfriendly (joke) loft but that I need some kids too. You guys even make parenting look rad.

Enough gushing. I’m going to go sob into a pillow now.

What did you do with the storefront space?  Are you living on the mainfloor at all? Do you have any pictures of the skylight too?  Love the loft living in a small town!

Woah. I am blown away. I have so many questions, the chief of them being: where did you score the awesome green sofa?

Buy and stock up consumables like shampoo, socks, stationery, under garments etc.. to last you for the rest of the year.
